A collaboration between local youth organization, Blackspace, photographer Phyllis B. Dooney and Historic Stagville. The one-night event takes place in Horton Grove’s Great Barn, a historic site built by the enslaved craftsmen on Stagville Plantation. The site is enlivened with projections of Dooney’s contemporary portraits and moving image of descendants of Stagville’s enslaved population from her project The Vertigo of Time. The evening presentation begins with talks from Stagville representative Vera Cecelski and Phyllis B. Dooney. Blackspace’s spoken word poets, Mariah M., Dasan Ahanu, and A.yoni Jeffries, deliver original spoken word pieces—based on recorded interviews of descendants that Dooney collected in the field. The evening ends with a talk by local scholar and activist, Pierce Freelon.
