Artist’s Reception: Titus Brooks Heagins

October 7, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Opening reception for “Songs of the South!”, with refreshments.
The artist will be present and give a short talk about his work.
Free to the public.

To be “Southern,” one must either have been born south of the Mason Dixon Line or have “people” there to claim it as native ground. The truly Southern, that is to say native Southerners, are either descendants of slaves, indentured servants, Native peoples, or the original colonist of the region.

Contemporary Southern identity is complex. What captures the essence of the South and her Southerners today? Is it the spirit of evangelicals, the presence of whom influences and continues to transform lives of everyone who lives in the region also known as the “Bible Belt?” Is it the mix of discernible dialects and sub-dialects that are less about isolation and more about historical ties? Or, lest we forget, is it the great number of double wide modular homes that dot the landscapes, both rural and urban?

Songs of the South! is an attempt to visualize the expressions that hold sway over a population of Southerners; it endeavors to capture the people of the region and how they inhabit their own place.
