Mariette Pathy Allen: Transcendents: Spirit Mediums in Burma and Thailand
A one-night pop-up exhibition with lecture and book signing sponsored by Daylight Books and the Power Plant Gallery
Join us on Tuesday evening for a reception and lecture with Mariette Pathy Allen. A pop-up exhibition of her new photographs from Transcendents will be on view in the boiler room lobby prior to the lecture. Transcendents, in collaboration with Dr. Eli Coleman, professor and director of the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota, studies the phenomenon of gender variance among the spirit cults of Burma and Thailand. This book combines a raw, personal, photographic standpoint with an anthropological and sexological perspective on the genderfluid spirit mediums in Thailand and Burma.
Mariette Pathy Allen has been a pioneering force in gender consciousness, contributing to numerous cultural and academic publications about gender variance and lecturing worldwide. A published author and photographer, her other titles include: Transformations: Crossdressers and Those Who Love Them (1990), The Gender Frontier (2003), and Transcuba (2014). Allen has exhibited in numerous galleries including the Power Plant Gallery exhibition titled Transgender USA (Fall 2016), which focused on photographs taken in the United States from the early 1980’s through today.
